La Catusse is a 5 bedroom farmhouse with a separate 1 bedroom gite. As the owners, Neil & Gill, live on site this means only one of the properties is available for rent at any one time. Each property has direct access to the pool. The 1.5 acres garden is mainly grass and is surrounded by farmland. La Catusse is accessed by a good road less than a minute from the D1, midway between Lauzun and Miramont-de-Guyenne. There is ample parking at the property.
From the entrance a small hallway leads to a cloakroom with WC and basin, the office, the stairs and the sitting room from where you access the kitchen and dining room. French doors lead out to the terrace from the dining room. Upstairs there are 5 bedrooms: a master bedroom with kingsize bed and en-suite shower room, bedroom 2 with kingsize bed, en-suite WC & wash basin, bedroom 3 with double bed and bedrooms 4 & 5, set up as twin rooms with full size single beds. There is also a large family bathroom with a bath and a separate shower enclosure.
From the entrance (through the arched door by the pool) you enter the main living space – kitchen at one end and sitting room at the other. French windows lead out to a private terrace. A door at the kitchen end of this room leads through to the bedroom with a kingsize bed and on to the en-suite wet room with shower. The living area has a bed settee for occasional use but we feel the gite is best suited to 2 people.
La Catusse is situated 5kms from Lauzun, a small town with ATM, baker, butcher, 2 restaurants, small supermarket; and 5km from Miramont de Guyenne, a larger town that has more of all of the above plus bigger supermarkets. Technically in the Lot et Garonne departement but sitting on the Dordogne and Gironde borders in the Aquitaine region, La Catusse is a great base for exploring one of the most beautiful areas in France.
Historic Bastide Towns
Eyemet (8km) is the closest of the many pretty bastide towns in the area. They each have a good selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants and most have a weekly market. Issigeac’s (24km) Sunday market is definitely one of the best. In July and August there are also night markets available and “tables gourmandes” in many local villages. This is street dining offering visitors the chance to sample locally produced wines and foodstuffs.
Bergerac (30mins)is the closest “big” town with its picturesque old centre and Bordeaux is only 90 minutes away by car. The city is a World Heritage Site and was voted Europe’s best destination in 2015 so offers something for everyone.
Being in the Bordeaux wine producing area means there are a lot of wine tours and tastings on offer. St Emilion, about an hour away, is the most famous of the 21 appellations in the area and the world heritage site is definitely worth a visit. The narrow streets with their numerous wine shops, cafes and restaurants provide a beautiful setting and the journey through the vineyards on the wine train is not to be missed. Closer to home, around Bergerac, many of the local Chateaux and Caves offer free tastings and tours; Monbazzilac being one of the best.
The Atlantic coast is about a 2 hour drive away but there are a number of closer lakes with beaches for swimming. There are also a number of municipal swimming pools in the surrounding area and even a few waterparks about an hour’s drive away. It’s also possible to canoe and kayak on the nearby Dropt and Garonne rivers as well as on the more challenging Dordogne.
Is a great way of exploring the gently rolling countryside as the many roads meander amongst the fields, vineyards and villages.
The nearest course is 9 holes and located at Tobeboeuf (15km) but if you want an 18 hole experience Chateau de Vigiers (27km) and Villeneuve-sur-lot Golf and Country Club (33km) are within easy reach.
There are a number of stables within a short drive.
The nearest tennis courts are in Lauzun(5km).
The rolling gentle countryside provides a number of good local walks over a variety of different distances.
